This beer stein is being issued in limited edition by the "Verein Oktoberfestmuseum e.V." on behalf of the city of Munich, the capital of the state of Bavaria. The material is best-quality glazed stoneware, and each mug is hand-made. The rich, heraldic décor -design Jutta Hohngarten-Feistel - in a grey-blue tone depicts traditional elements of the Oktoberfest, and the historic Munich escutcheon, "Münchner Kindl", emphasizes the official character of this festival stein. The subtle irregularities and differences in the surface structure, as well as variation in color, are sure signs of piecemeal manufacture; each mug is individual. Charm and value are enhanced considerably by the hand-forged lid of solid pewter and by the delicate line work. The lid is actually, an exact copy of the motif on the 1935 medal minted in silver and bronze to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Oktoberfest. The busts are of Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen and of Crown Prince Ludwig I of Bavaria. On the occasion of the royal marriage, members of the National Guard initiated a horse race on 17th October, 1810, an event that was so successful that the meadow where this race took place immediately became know as the "Theresienwiese" and the authorities decided to repeat the festivities year after year - the birth of the Oktoberfest! The vigorous, relevant design, the motif and fine scroll on the lid, and minute other details reveal the hand of a master craftsman, making this stein a prized souvenir or collector's piece.
